Restoration projects

Lime mortars, renders and washes act as a poultice, drawing residual water and harmful salts away from the fabric of a building, leaving it sound and dry.

This capacity to draw water out can actively remedy damp problems inside a building, and dramatically reduce the damage caused by trapped water and the effects of frost on exterior walls.

When the elements eventually take their toll, this relatively soft poultice is easily replaced, leaving the fabric of the building healthy and intact.

Rough cast render on traditional chimney
Severe damp problems inside this Elizabethan chimney suggested that damaged cement should be replaced with a lime render. Sure enough, stubborn patches appeared on the exterior walls as years of trapped moisture, salts and soot were drawn out. A new lime wash was applied a year later, and to our delight it has remained bright and clean, indicating that the rough cast render has done its work, and the wall is now sound and dry.
