All lime mortar, whether it is used for pointing, render or plaster, acts as a poultice drawing moisture and harmful salts away from the fabric of the building and leaving it sound, dry and pleasant to live in.

Rough cast render, otherwise known as harling, is made with a coarse sand, and the top coat, as its name suggests, is thrown on fast and loose.

This produces a vacuum which improves adhesion, and its bobbly surface gives walls the optimum capacity to breathe. It can be left as it is, or finished with a lime wash.
